As coalitions participate in dialogues about Sexual Assault Kits (SAK), it is important for us to consider multiple facets of the issue. Addressing needs related to SAK evidence requires us to think deeply about how to best address protection of victim rights and confidentiality, offender accountability, community safety, and sexual violence prevention through an anti-oppression lens. Addressing backlogged and untested kits will require a review of the entire sexual assault response system– healthcare, criminal legal, and advocacy– and review of laws pertaining to collection and storage of evidence.
